Birding Alert: Allen Lewis, a member of the Howard County Bird Club, spotted a Western kingbird in our northwest field Sept. 20. This is the first verified record of the species in Howard County – state-wide alerts about the sighting were sent. A type of flycatcher, the Western kingbird’s scientific name is Tyrannus verticalis, which refers to their tyrannical defense of territory.
