Did you catch the Conservancy’s Director Meg Boyd this morning on the Fox 45 morning show talking about our “Take a Pass on Plastic” campaign? She talked about ways to reduce plastic use over the holidays which you can also read about below:
- Utensils – Warehouse stores like Costco have silverware for about .50 cents each. This is the best option for the environment and you will end up saving money over time. The next best option is compostable products made from bamboo, starch or sugarcane. They are almost the same cost as plastic but are made of a renewable source that will decompose over time. Plastic utensils are the worst choice, they are not recyclable and plastic does not decompose for many centuries, and when it does it pollutes our waterways.
- Another important aspect of reducing plastic waste is proper disposal. When hosting events, it is important to provide adequate waste management options, such as clearly labeled recycling and compost bins. In some cases, it may be necessary to rent a dumpster to handle the increased waste. If you are interested in learning more about sustainable waste management options, visit website to learn more. Renting a dumpster can be a convenient and cost-effective solution, especially if you choose a company that prioritizes sustainable waste disposal practices.

- Buy beverages in boxes, not pouches or plastic. Choose boxed juice! And did you know you can even get boxed water?!
- When wrapping gifts, gift bags are best. Using newspaper/comics is a great option. Paper wrap can be recycled, but foil wrap cannot. Be aware of your choices to help reduce waste and contamination of recycling.
- When you unpack your groceries put your reusable bags with your car keys so you remember to put the bags back in your car.
