Nature Writing

January 13, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

Join us for a nature inspired day fun for all ages! Come learn about Haiku with Tim Singleton, and enjoy crafts lead by Columbia Families in Nature for younger children.

Columbia Families in Nature leaders will lead creative craft activities inspired by nature. Younger children will be guided in creating a visual poetic art project exploring the different forms that water can take, such as snowflakes, raindrops and ice.
Nature writing with Tim Singleton: If you can count seventeen syllables and think of nature, you can write a haiku, right? Not so fast. There’s so much more to this tiny form than its commonly presumed 5-7-5 structure. Learn how haiku is a tool to grow a practitioner’s skills of observation, articulation, mindfulness, compassion, awareness in this workshop that reintroduces the craft of haiku-making and what
it has to offer.  We’ll talk of the history of haiku, look at a variety of samples, learn a few key components, and observe the world around us to write some of our own haiku, distilling experience into that sharable ‘Aha’ moment through an economy of words that makes another human being go, “Oh, wow.”
